I am SO excited you have chosen me to capture your family! Below is all you need to know to prepare for our session!

CLIENT CLOSET

STEP 1: PICK A COLOuR PALETTE

Our aim is to complement each other, not match exactly—that’s the key to creating timeless photos! Start by choosing two or three neutral tones (see examples on the right, or below if viewing on mobile) and build your outfits around them. These colours should make up the majority of your clothing for a cohesive and effortless look.

STEP 2: ADD AN ACCENT COLOuR (OR 2)

Your accent colour is where you can add a little pop! It’s usually a richer, bolder shade that stands out just enough without overpowering the look. You can weave it in through accessories like scarves, hats, jewelry, or shoes—or even have one family member wear a shirt or dress in that color for a subtle yet stylish touch, I always love putting Mum in one of these bolder colours.

Colours to avoid

When choosing outfits for your photos, it’s best to avoid neon colors, pure black, and stark white. Neon tones can create unnatural color casts on the skin, making editing tricky and leaving an odd glow in your images. Pure black, while slimming, often loses detail in photos and can look flat, especially in natural light. On the other hand, bright white can be overly reflective, causing harsh highlights and washing out details. Instead, opt for softer, muted tones or earthy neutrals—they photograph beautifully, complement skin tones, and help create a timeless, cohesive look.

style tips for her

Dress it up! Let’s be real—if you’re reading this, chances are you’re the one making the outfit decisions (hey, mom!). My top tip? Go for a long, flowing dress. They photograph beautifully, add movement to your images, and can make you feel amazing. Plus, they flatter in all the right ways and add an effortless elegance to your photos.

Pro tip: If you’ve got little ones, chances are you’ll be bending, kneeling, or picking them up. A dress that’s at least knee-length will keep you comfortable while still looking stunning in your photos!

Whether you're doing your own hair and makeup or treating yourself to a professional glam session, it’s best to plan ahead! If you're booking an appointment, schedule it at least two weeks before your session to secure your spot. On the day, leave plenty of time between your appointment and the photoshoot so you’re not feeling rushed—because the more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be!

Pro tip: If you’re thinking about a fresh haircut or color, aim to do it at least a week before your session. This gives it time to settle and look its best in photos!

style tips for him

First things first—listen to your wife! She’s got your best interest at heart and wants you to look amazing in these photos. When choosing your outfit, steer clear of small, busy patterns like gingham, anything too bold (think loud plaids or neon colors), and graphic tees.

Most importantly, wear something you feel good in! If you’re not the dress-pants-and-blazer type, no worries—this isn’t the time to step too far out of your comfort zone. The goal is to look like the best version of you.

Pro Tip: Skip anything with frayed edges, ripped jeans, or intentional holes. Clean, well-fitted clothing will help your photos look polished and timeless for years to come!

Accessories can pull your whole look together, so plan them ahead of time—belts, watches, rings, and shoes all matter. If you’re tucking in your shirt and wearing a belt, make sure your shoes coordinate for a polished look.

And guys, I know the baseball cap might be your go-to, but let’s skip it for the session! We want to see your face, not shadows from the brim.

Pro Tip: Do a quick comfort check before the session—can you sit, move, and raise your arms without anything riding up or showing that shouldn’t be? And don’t forget about socks! They will make an appearance, so stick to neutral colors that match your outfit.

style tips for the kids

If you have young kids (five and under), consider bringing their outfits to the location and changing them right before we start. This helps avoid spills, wrinkles, or surprise messes on the way. For in-home sessions, it’s best to wait until I arrive before getting them dressed. While I can edit out a small stain or smudge, a full-on diaper disaster or a carsick kid is a different story!

Pro Tip: For little girls in dresses, don’t forget bloomers! Diapers and undies aren’t the most photogenic—but ruffle bottoms? Absolutely adorable!

is this a newborn session?

There’s nothing more special than photographing some of a baby’s very first moments—it’s truly an honor! To make things easier, I provide a client closet for newborns (yay!), which you’re welcome to use, or you can bring your own outfits if you have something special in mind.

I also offer simple, cozy wrapping for newborns—no intricate posing, just sweet, natural moments. I can also do more intricate wrapping and posing if desired.

Pro Tip: If you have sentimental items like a special blanket, an announcement plaque, or anything else you'd love to include, set them aside the night before so nothing gets forgotten in the excitement of the day!

the night before

Lay out clothes

Steam any wrinkles (especially in moms dress or dads pants!)

Pack a bag for the kids (think snacks, lollipops and/or their favourite toy!)

picture day

My number one tip: Don't let picture day stress you out! I want our time together to be fun!! We will laugh and play and I will capture the love between y'all.

Tip two: Set the mood on the way to your shoot. Avoid heavy topics (politics or finances!) and instead use the time to connect! Tell stories or share your favorite family memory from this past year! It's ok if you're a few minutes like, as long as you arrive in good spirits!

a quick note on photoshopping

YES, I will absolutely edit your photos! This includes adjusting lighting, enhancing colors, and removing small blemishes or stains to make sure everything looks polished and beautiful.

NO, I won’t be using Photoshop to drastically change your appearance. My goal is to create natural, timeless images that reflect the real, wonderful you!

questions?

If you read this and you still have questions or want help deciding what to wear please reach out! My goal as your photographer is not to show up and just snap a few pics. I want to give you images you cherish! That being said, you can trust I will point you in the right direction and help you and your family look your best!
